Live in the Details®: Classic + Contemporary Primary Bathroom Design

We recently completed an owner’s suite addition on an idyllic street and neighborhood in St. Paul. The Bayard Avenue primary bathroom is classic and contemporary in design, mixing warm and cool tones with modern accents that will stand the test of time.

You’ve asked, we’re receiving on how to create a classic + contemporary design for a primary bathroom through three easy steps:

1. Blending Warm + Cool Tones

Contrast is important. Mixing finishes across warm and cool tones through the tile, vanity, and finishes will carry the design through time. Remember the grey vs. beige war of the 2010s? Mixing warm and cool tones will always win.

In the Bayard Avenue primary bathroom we mixed cool polished nickel and black plumbing fixtures and accessories with a custom stained white oak vanity and warm ivory floor tile.

2. Modern + Classic Elements

Modern lines with classic finishes will carry the design through every trend for decades. The hexagonal lines of the floor tile in the Bayard Avenue project are modern yet the soft ivory weave pattern is more traditional.

3. Start with a Neutral Palette

Proving a neutral base makes interchanging trendier pieces in and out through time. Paint walls colorful colors or add wallpaper that makes your heart dance. Bring in color and pattern through decor on shelves, vanity top, and artwork. Here is our designing guide to create a neutral space that is beautiful, not boring. Plus our most asked question: favorite neutral paint colors.
